Frequently Asked Questionsl

Application Procedure

All students are admitted into EVCS by lottery.  Parents/guardians may obtain an application on our web site www.elmwoodvillageschool.org or by calling the school office at (716) 886-4581.  The application deadline is April 1, 2013.  The lottery will be held on April 9, 2013, at 6:00 p.m. at the school, and is open to the public. The names of all children that were submitted for the lottery will be drawn.  Once all available seats have been filled, students will be put on the waiting list in the order that their names were drawn.  The waiting list will be used to fill slots, should any become available, throughout the course of the school year.  Parents/guardians must complete a new application and re-enter their child’s name in the lottery annually.  Once a child has been admitted into the school, his or her seat is secure and parents do not need to re-apply in subsequent years.  Preference is given to siblings of students who are currently enrolled in the school and residents of the City of Buffalo.

Arrival

Students should arrive between 7:45 and 8:10 a.m. A child is considered tardy if he/she arrives after 8:15 a.m. Children should be dropped off at the main entrance on Elmwood Ave.

Dismissal

Students are dismissed at 3:30 p.m. Kindergarten students are dismissed from the gymnasium.

Lunch/Breakfast

EVCS partners with the Buffalo Public Schools Food Service Department to meet the nutritional needs of our students. A cold breakfast and hot lunch are available every day. Breakfast is available from 7:45 to 8:10 a.m. at no cost.  Free or reduced cost lunch is available for eligible families.

Before and After-School Care

EVCS partners with the Boys’ and Girls’ Club to provide before-school care beginning at 7:15 a.m. and after-school care until 6:00 p.m. The program is run on site by the Boys and Girls Club of Western New York as a convenience to parents of students enrolled at EVCS.  Families must complete a separate registration form for this program, and a modest fee may be charged on a sliding scale.

Dress Code

Students should dress comfortably, modestly, and appropriately for school. Sneakers may be worn, but for student safety heelys and flip-flops are not permitted. A student’s manner of dress should not distract from instruction. Hats and head coverings are not permitted to be worn in the building unless for religious observance.  Students should wear loose fitting clothes and sneakers on days when physical education or dance classes are scheduled. Students are not permitted to wear dangling jewelry on days when they have scheduled physical education and dance classes.

Food Allergies

Parents/guardians should make sure that the school nurse and the child’s teacher are aware of any food allergies. EVCS is not a peanut free school, but we endeavor to keep the classrooms peanut free. Parents/guardians are asked not to send any snacks to school containing any nut products.

Nursing Services

EVCS has a nurse on premises five days each week. Parents/guardians should notify the school nurse of any health related issues.

Building Security

For the safety of our children, visitors and parents/guardians must be buzzed into the building. Everyone entering the building must use the main entrance and sign in at the main office. When parents/guardians press the buzzer, they will be asked to give their name and the name of their child. The front entrance is monitored by a security camera. If there are special issues regarding non-custodial parents, please make sure that all necessary paperwork is on file with school personnel.

Classroom Volunteers

Parents and guardians are invited to share special talents and skills with our students. If there is something that you wish to share with your child’s classroom, please discuss this with your child’s teacher.

Parent-Teacher Conferences

Four parent-teacher conferences are scheduled during the year.  The first is a meet-the-teacher night where parents are given an overview of the curriculum, programs, and expectations.  The other three allow for individual conferences with your child’s teacher.  Teachers are also available by appointment between 7:45 and 8:00 a.m. and 3:30 and 4:00 p.m.

Transportation

At the present time, EVCS does not provide busing.  Metro Bus passes are available for students at no charge. The parent organization of EVCS does assist in arranging carpooling. Before-school care with breakfast is available to students beginning at 7:15 a.m., and after-school care with dinner is available until 6:00 p.m.

School Health Screenings

New York State Education Law requires that students receive vision, hearing and scoliosis screenings as part of the school health services provided by each public school district. The purpose of these screenings is to detect the presence of problems likely to impede a student’s learning.  If the results of the screening indicate that your child requires further follow-up, you will receive written notification.
