Welcome Message From The Director

Elmwood Village Charter School began as a vision of a parent living in the Elmwood Village area of Buffalo.  She envisioned a small community school that would be able to address the individual learning needs of its students. She assembled a group of educational experts that included veteran teachers, university professors, behavioral experts, and school administrators...more>>

Admissions

Click on this link to get the EVCS Application

Elmwood Village Charter School is a public school of choice, and there is no tuition or fees required for attendance.  Admission to EVCS is done through a lottery system. In order to enter a child in the lottery, parents/guardians must submit a COMPLETED APPLICATION by Monday, March 29, 2010. The public lottery will be held on, Thursday, April 1, 2010. Students who do not secure a spot in the school through the lottery are placed on a waiting list. Siblings of students who are currently enrolled at EVCS are given preference. In the event that we have more siblings applying for admission than available seats, a sibling lottery will be held before the general lottery. Once a student is admitted to EVCS, that child's place in the school is secure, and he or she will not have to go through the lottery in subsequent years. Preference for admission must also be given to Buffalo residents. Applications received after March 29th may result in a child being placed on the waiting list.  EVCS does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national origin, religion, native language, disability, or marital status of a student’s parents.

About our Facility

124 Elmwood Avenue was constructed in the 1920s as the New York Telephone Company Operators’ Building.  The façade of the building features the traditional ornate Greek Key Pattern, which was typical of that era, that some scholars suggest symbolizes the bonds of devotion, eternal life, the meander of life, creative energy, and the four seasons.  After the New York Telephone Company vacated the facility, it became a multi-use building housing businesses that included a nightclub, a dentist’s office, and a hair salon.  Over time, the building fell into disrepair and remained empty for fifteen years.  In 2006, the building was acquired by Savarino Companies, and the architectural firm of Carmina, Wood and Morris was commissioned to develop plans to convert the building into a 21st century school for the Elmwood Village Charter School.   The unique design reflects the Allentown neighborhood, Buffalo’s oldest neighborhood and the center of the Buffalo arts community, with the original façade; bright, colorful, large classrooms; a covered atrium; and large windows.  The building is a perfect example of how an outdated building can be converted into a modern facility while still keeping its historical appearance.  The building was the winner of the 2007 Brick by Brick Award for best educational design.
